HMS liaise with United Utilities

Pipe responsibility

From October 1 2011, the Government introduced new legislation on water companies in England and Wales to take over responsibility for many sewer and drain pipes which are currently under private ownership.

The new legislation is designed to remove the responsibility from customers, and give it to water companies instead. Here in the North West, United Utilities have the ownership and maintenance of an estimated 32,200km of pipes.

In order to ensure our customers do not see any reduction in the service we currently provide. HMS and LMH have been liaising with United Utilities to establish procedures that will fall into place should a repair to a customer’s drains be required.

Many of the drains within the curtillage of LMH properties will still be maintained by HMS. The drawing above shows the new changes.
